What Is the Rock Wool Used For?

1. What is mineral wool insulation?

The mineral wool, also known as rock wool or stone wool, is a rock-based material fiber insulation comprised of basalt, dolomite, and recycled slag: the former two are rock-forming materials while the latter refers to a by-product of the steel industry.

Actually, the term “mineral wool” refers to two types of insulation materials: rock wool that contains only between 16 to 40 percent slag; and slag wool that can be made with up to 75 percent recycled material.

Despite the difference in the amount of this recycled material, both the rock wool and the slag wool are created by melting mineral materials into fibers to create a cotton-candy-like wool product.

After that these fibers are gathered together and pressed into different forms, such as loose-fill rock wool blankets, rigid rock wool board, or rolls of mineral wool pipe insulation, etc. This rock wool insulation can be either flexible or rigid, delivering a full scale of solutions to match your needs.

2. What is the rock wool insulation used for?

Rock wool can be widely used where any other type of insulation is applied, including walls, floors, ceilings, attics, etc. In terms of its applications, it’s often compared with glass wool, which costs less but renders less effectiveness.

Generally speaking, mineral wool insulation is popular for heat preservation, sound deadening, and fireproofing. More specifically, the Rockwool insulation uses the following:

Rock Wool External Wall Insulation

These Rockwool boards are made of fibers compacted tightly together and there’s no chance of the rock wool insulation shifting out of position or slumping down, which would dramatically decrease its insulation value. Moreover, these mineral wool boards also provide effective rock wool sound insulation and rock wool insulation fireproof.

Besides, these dense mineral wool batts are featured sound-reducing and deadening properties, which offer effective rock wool sound insulation.

Rock Wool Curtain Wall Insulation

The mineral wool insulation material is ideal for applications that need lightweight, easy-to-install insulation with robust thermal performance. And for this reason, the rock wool is also widely used for heat preservation in the curtain wall systems, which is to protect the building’s interior against exterior natural phenomena such as sun exposure, temperature changes, etc.

Compared with fiberglass batts, the mineral wool insulation has about a 22-37% higher R-value per inch. Moreover, this material also serves as rock wool fire barrier by limiting the fire spread without creating toxic fumes. Besides, the moisture will not compromise its thermal resistance as the water will bead up and run off the surface.

Rock Wool Pipe Insulation

Apart from the applications in residential or commercial buildings as we mentioned before, mineral wool can also be used for rock wool high-temperature insulation, such as rock wool blankets for industrial boilers or tanks, mineral wool pipe insulation, etc.

3. What are the advantages of rockwool insulation uses?

As a rock wool insulation supplier, ECOINS has been making efforts to offer you the rock wool insulation of high quality. Our rock wool insulation materials feature the following advantages:

High Insulating Value

As we mentioned before, rock wool is characterized with a higher insulation value then fiberglass. Besides, this insulation value doesn’t degrade as the years go by. In other words, the initial value of mineral wool insulation will be retained, which doesn’t only guarantee heat preservation in your buildings but also thermal insulation in your industrial applications. This property is essential for rockwool high temperature insulation, such as rock wool pipe insulation.

High Water Repellency

Compared with other insulation materials such as foam rubber sheet, the mineral wall is naturally moisture-resistant. This means that that damp can freely circulate and evaporate, so the risk of damp problems remains limited. This is essential for rock wool external wall insulation and rock wool curtain wall insulation because the wall, in particular the cavity often gets in touch with damp.

High Fire Resistance

The mineral wool will not burn until the temperature reaches beyond 1000 °C. This high melting point makes the material actually performs as rock wool fire barrier, slowing down house fires and giving the occupants more time to escape.

Excellent Sound-Deadening Property

The rock wool is a suitable material not only in terms of stopping fire but also in terms of preventing noise. Thanks to its texture of high density, a lot of unwanted sounds won’t be able to penetrate the house. For this reason, the rock wool external wall insulation and the rock wool curtain wall insulation also prevent the buildings from suffering acoustic invasion.
